Exchange Account Restricted or Frozen: Causes and How to Appeal

Withdrawals suddenly disabled? Learn the difference between a feature restriction, a verification hold, a risk review and a freeze — plus what triggers each, what evidence to gather, and how to write an appeal.

Exchange Account Restricted or Frozen: Causes and How to Appeal

Illustration of exchange account risk controls: a shield and lock representing a restricted account

You log in and suddenly withdrawals are off, trading is blocked, or a banner reads "unusual activity detected — please contact support." The first reaction is usually panic. But "restricted" is not the same as "frozen," and neither means your assets were confiscated — in most cases an automated risk system paused certain functions until you supply information or finish a verification step.

What genuinely makes things worse are three panic reactions: seeking help from unofficial "support," repeatedly retrying logins from new devices or IPs, and filing duplicate appeals. This guide covers why risk controls trigger, what you can verify yourself, and what an effective appeal contains.

First, identify which situation you are in

Type Typical symptom Common cause General path forward
Feature restriction Only withdrawals or P2P unavailable, rest works Recent security change, new device, holding period Usually clears automatically after the stated window
Verification hold Prompt to re-verify or submit documents Expired documents, mismatched details, policy update Submit what is requested and wait for review
Risk review Withdrawal or trade stuck under review Unusual amount, changed behaviour, flagged counterparty Explain source and purpose of funds
Account freeze Cannot log in, or all functions disabled Compliance investigation, suspected takeover, legal or third-party request Official channels only; can take considerably longer

The first diagnostic step is reading what the platform itself put on the page. The system normally states a category and a next action — read it fully before deciding whether to open a ticket.

What commonly triggers risk controls

A recent security change. After a password change, a new phone number, or a 2FA reset, platforms widely apply a withdrawal holding period. That is protection, not punishment. Our exchange security settings guide covers the order to do these in.

A sudden change in login environment. A new phone, travelling abroad, or switching networks can all read as an anomalous login. Using a VPN that makes your apparent location jump around is one of the most reliable ways to trigger a review.

Flagged fund flows. If coins you received originate from a flagged address, or your counterparty is tied to suspicious activity, the platform may pause the related assets. This is exactly where P2P demands care — see our P2P scam checklist.

Identity details inconsistent with account behaviour. For example, a verified residence far from where the account is consistently accessed, or a paying account whose name differs from your verified name.

Signs the account is not operated by its owner. Lending, managed trading on someone else's behalf, and shared accounts are explicitly prohibited under most terms of service — and are the hardest category to appeal successfully.

Five things to do when you get a restriction notice

1. Access only through the official app or site

Do not click the link in the notification email; use your own bookmark or the official app. Restriction notices are the scenario phishing emails imitate most, precisely because users are anxious and compliant at that moment.

2. Read the platform's stated reason in full

Screenshot the on-page message, the timestamp and any ticket number. These become the basis for every later conversation.

3. Stop repeating actions

Do not keep retrying the withdrawal, cycling devices or networks, or filing fresh tickets. Repetition itself registers as a further anomaly signal.

4. Assemble supporting evidence

Depending on the case you may need: identity documents, proof of address, source-of-funds evidence (payslips, trade history, transfer receipts), counterparty transaction screenshots, and on-chain TXIDs.

5. Communicate only through official tickets

No platform proactively offers to "speed up your unfreeze" in a Telegram group, a social reply or a DM. Anyone asking for a fee to unfreeze, or for your password, verification code, seed phrase, or remote access to your device, is running a scam.

How to write an appeal that actually moves

Write the ticket as a checkable list of facts, not a statement of frustration:

  1. Account identifiers (registered email or UID — never a password).
  2. Date, time and timezone when the issue appeared.
  3. A screenshot of the complete on-screen message.
  4. Order IDs, TXIDs, amounts and counterparty details for the relevant transactions.
  5. A short source-of-funds explanation with supporting files.
  6. The outcome you are requesting (for example, restoring withdrawals).

Supplying everything at once is usually faster than five rounds of follow-up. If the platform asks for more, reply on the same ticket rather than opening a new one.

Reducing the chance of a repeat

  • Make security changes once, deliberately, rather than frequently.
  • Before travelling or switching devices, confirm the account is healthy from your usual environment.
  • Do not use a VPN to change your apparent location, lend your account, or trade on someone else's behalf.
  • Split large amounts, test small first, and keep receipts for every transaction.
  • Vet counterparties before receiving funds, especially in P2P and OTC.
  • Refresh verification documents before they expire.

FAQ

If my account is restricted, will my assets disappear?

Ordinarily a feature restriction does not affect your balance — you simply cannot move it for now. Where a compliance investigation or legal process is involved, the timeline and outcome are set by that process and the platform cannot release funds on its own.

How long until it is lifted?

There is no standard answer. Automated holding periods usually carry a stated duration shown on the page; manual reviews depend on case complexity and how complete your submission was.

Can I open a second account and move the assets out?

No. Using multiple accounts to work around risk controls breaches most platforms' terms and can get both accounts restricted, making resolution harder.

Someone offered to unfreeze my account for a fee — is that real?

No. This is textbook secondary fraud: the victim is already anxious, so the scammer invokes an "internal channel," collects a payment, and disappears.

Would switching exchanges avoid the problem?

Not reliably. Compliance obligations are industry-wide, a new platform means redoing verification, and it does nothing to accelerate the original case. If you want to compare platforms, see our OKX vs Binance comparison.
