What Is a Crypto Memo or Destination Tag? Missing-Tag Recovery Checklist

Some exchanges use one on-chain deposit address for many customers, then use a memo, tag, or destination tag to assign the incoming funds internally. Think of the address as an apartment building and the tag as the unit number.

When Is It Required?

If the receiving page shows both an address and a memo or tag, copy both. Tags are common in some XRP, XLM, and ATOM deposit flows, but wallet architecture varies by exchange and can change.

If no tag appears, do not invent random digits. A tag from a previous platform or account is not reusable evidence.

Match the Two Fields

Compare the first and last address characters and verify every digit of a short tag. Do not substitute an order ID or account number.

Recovery Checklist After a Mistake

1. Do not send another payment to fix the first one and do not hire a recovery expert from direct messages.
2. Confirm the transaction on a block explorer and save the TXID.
3. Record asset, network, amount, time, sender, destination, correct tag, and incorrect tag if one was used.
4. Contact the receiving platform, because its address received the funds.
5. Complete ownership and source checks requested through the official ticket system. Manual recovery may cost a fee or may not be available.

Exchange Address vs Self-Custody

A self-custody wallet often gives the owner a unique address and may not need a tag. A centralized exchange often maps shared addresses to an internal ledger. This is a useful model, not a universal rule; the current deposit page wins.
